I'm brazilian and I live in Brazil. I have a similar crappy tool lying around here in my room (which is my current shop- long history...). I tried this using my electric drill as a part of my fret-pressing jig. Of course it failed, since the pressure I had to apply on it was stronger than the holding capabilities of the press itself! the electric drill fell off the press, "fret caul and all". Thank god I was installing frets on a practice bolt on neck. I'll try your idea of disasembling part of this "tool from hell". thanks for sharing! Bye.

I just ordered the stew mac version. I am lazy yes but realized that $50 or 2 hours is the same dif.

I'll have to spend that time taking my arbor into a shop to get a 3/8" hole in the shaft to hold the press anyway. Of course my drill press might do the trick. I bet it has a tad to little force while the arbor to much.

One thing I can say - the hammer method may be the traditional way but its a real time waster. Plus all that ting ting ting when it comes time to level with the steel block .... I look forward to ending that.

I too was lucky enough to acquire one of these. I found the best use for it was to try to crush your fingers under it...an impossible task and one which left you feeling like Superman. Top stuff.

I tried to make one as well but the flex in the stand was so bad it wouldn't even press a fret into Indian Rose Wood.

I've got that same crappy drill press, and it ruined my life while I was trying to drill for a string thru. Now I've got to pull it out of the trash heap so I can try this.
