Motorists should be asked to pay to drive on the nation’s road network, a report commissioned by the government has recommended.

Gah! What the hell did I pay for with the road tax disc I bought two days ago? Isn’t my council tax supposed to pay for the upkeep of local roads?

Honestly, do we need a huge computerised infrastructure to charge people for road use or would it be reasonable for taxes taken from petrol sales to go towards this? Consumption of fuel is pretty much proportional to distance travelled and size of vehicle, so until there are electric cars making up a significant portion of motorway travellers it should be a no brainer.

Ah well, grumbling about tax is a sure sign I’m old. Bugger.
